The Academy of Sciences of the CzechRepublic

The Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is a network of 54 public scientific institutions. It is staffed by nearly 7000 employees, over half of whom are researchers with a university degree and a PhD. qualification.

The Academy’s main mission is basic research in the wide area of natural, technical, human and social sciences.Such research - whether highly specialized or interdisciplinary in nature - strives for knowledge on an international level while considering the current needs of Czech society and culture.

The institutes of the Academy of Sciences are also involved in education, primarily through doctoral programs, but also through the pedagogical activities of scientists at universities. The Academy also develops cooperation with targeted research companies and industries.

The main point of interlinking basic research with the field of application lies in direct contacts between individual Academy institutes and their partners in industry, health care, development centers, etc.International cooperation plays an important role too, for example, in the costly area of testing research results applicable in medicine.

In order to speed up the process of transformation of scientific knowledge into practice, the Academy opens The Program of Targeted Research and Development.  The Technology Center of the AS CR is also involved in this area, as it contributes to cooperation with industry mainly through its activities in technology transfers, the search for industry partners for research and development projects and the support of the formation and development of small innovative companies in the area of business. The Technology Center of the ASCR has designed, together with several Academy departments, the project of the Scientific Park of the ASCR, whose concept is based on a model well-tried in EU countries. The ScientificPark should enable further development of innovative businesses leaving the field of enterprise while retaining their close cooperation and synergy with academic research.

In 1993 the Czech Republic Grant Agency (GAČR) was established by Act No. 300/1992 Coll.as an independent Czech institute for the specific financing of key scientific research by means of financial grants of a duration of 1 to 5 years.

Ministries

Scientific programs are also announced by individual ministries of the Czechgovernment from their budgets in areas within their competence.

The European Union

Czech scientists are also involved in scientific programs organized by the EU, of which the Czech Republic became a member state in 2004. Programs are announced within the 7th Research Framework Programme - CORDIS for the years 2007-13.
