Říp is the best-known Czech mountain. According to legend, the primal father Čech (Czech) brought his folk to Říp and settled here because of the fertile land.
The top of this basalt bell-shaped mountain was probably a cult place in early times, as the ceramic findings from primeval and medieval times attest. On the top sits the Romanesque Rotunda of St. George, which dates to the 11th century.
Říp has been the place of famous pilgrimages and folk gatherings at important moments in Czech history. With one of the most beautiful views of the Czech Central Hillside (České středohoří), the Krušné Mountains opens from the top of Říp. During good weather even Prague is visible.
