A Czech theologist, philosopher, pedagogue, school and education system reformer, writer, the last bishop of the Unity of the Brethern.
He wrote a number of papers from many spheres; he mainly wrote in Czech, Latin and German. The most significant part of his work includes theological, philosophic and educational papers, which were before their time in many aspects. The most significant of them is a visual Latin textbook and a kind of encyclopedia called The Gate of Language Unlocked. His works Didactica magna (The Great Didactic), Orbis pictus (The Visible World in Pictures) – originally a Latin textbook – or The Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart are still in print today.
Comenius underlined the importance of education, working out the teaching principles in his work Theatrum universitatis rerum (The Theater of the World). Besides, he proposed an integrated educational system. He advanced Czech to a higher level and his works became the culminating point of the thinking development of the entire old Czech literature. His works were published in many languages and influenced the European way of thinking.
He spent the last 14 years of his life in Amsterdam, where he could devote his time to his works quietly. He died in 1670 and was buried in a Naarden chapel, where his earthly remains have lain to this day.
