The town of
Zlaté Hory (map), which is hosting this event, owes its existence to gold and gold mining. The 13th century was an important milestone in the history of the locality, when the massive Edelštejn Castle was built to protect the local gold mines. The foundations of the Cucmantal Mining Settlement, which is one of the first names for Zlaté Hory, which received town privileges in 1306, originated beneath this castle.
A varied accompanying programme – performances by many country and folk music bands, an exhibition of photographs from past gold panning events, a mineral market and an exhibition of gold samples from localities in Zlaté Hory – is prepared for visitors and competitors at this year’s event. Visitors can try their skills at the gold panning school and will learn plenty of interesting information about the present and history of gold mining from the guide during a walk along the educational mining trail.
