The goal of the specialist BIOCEV programme is detailed knowledge of cellular mechanisms on a molecular level, which will provide an impulse for research into new treatment procedures and technologies. Scientists will focus chiefly on developing new medications for treating illnesses, which can be fatal at present (for instance cancer). The centre will also encompass the professional preparation of students, future scientists.
Prof. Václav Pačes, DSc., science coordinator of the project, clarifies the benefits of the programme: “On the basis of knowledge of hereditary information (personalised medicine) it will be possible to design made to measure medication. We will be able to create medication with rational reasoning why such medication is being developed. We expect to have several key programmes, including central laboratories, which will be able to bring all this together, within the BIOCEV programme.”
The Czech Republic has a number of specialists who are scattered throughout various institutes and faculties; however, for the time being there is no facility where these people would be able to interact together. The BIOCEV Biotechnology and Biomedicine Centre of the Academy of Sciences and Charles University should start operation in January 2013.
Tuition and education of master’s and post-graduate students entered in study programmes specialising in biotechnology and biomedicine will also take place here. Specialised international courses for Czech and foreign students at various levels will be organised at the BIOCEV centre.
