Traditional markets and fairs

Folk crafts have always had a very strong tradition in the Czech lands. Work by local people was even famous far over the borders. You only have to mention the beautiful bobbin laces and embroidery, the hand-made costume jewellery, various utility basketry objects, world famous Czech glass, weaving techniques and products made by smiths and potters.

However, as a result of expanding factory production during the 19th century, folk crafts became of marginal interest and practically disappeared from our lives. Fortunately, during the last decades, these crafts have been revived and interest in them has grown again. This is apparent in many places in the Czech Republic, where traditional fairs and markets are held. You can purchase various home-made products here, produced according to traditional recipes, and also see examples of traditional crafts and technologies. You can see smiths, weavers and basket makers. Various bakery products, products made from honey or traditional regional specialities are also sold here. You can acquire many gifts – hand-made lace, wooden toys, bead jewellery, historic glass or pottery. Events frequently also include workshops, at which visitors can try making individual products themselves under the supervision of an experienced master.

Fairs and markets take place in towns practically year round. They are popular not only in summer as part of traditional fairs or historic festivals, but also at Easter or in winter during the Advent period.
