The famous Slav Epic will be once again available to the public in Prague. From May 2012, fans of Alfons Mucha and his large-scale paintings can visit an exhibition inspired by Slavic mythology and the history of the Czech nation and other Slavic nations in the Great Hall of Veletržní Palace in Prague.
Thus the
Slav Epic returned to Prague after 84 years. This monumental series of 20 paintings is back in the place where it was first introduced to the public in 1928. It was then stored in a depository, from where it was taken to the chateau in Moravský Krumlov, near the birthplace of
Alfons Mucha, in 1963.
The current exhibition is based on the original contents layout of Alfons Mucha’s Slav Epic. The paintings are displayed in chronological order of the depicted scenes. The author worked on the epic for 18 years (1910-1928). After he completed it, he donated the whole epic to the city of Prague and the Czechoslovak people. However, he had a condition that the city of Prague will exhibit the paintings at its own expense in a building built especially for this purpose. There is no such building in Prague, so the Slav Epic will stay in the Great Hall of Veletržní Palace for two years.
The exhibition is available to the public from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
