A medieval Czech religious thinker and also one of the most interesting figures of the Czech Hussite period during the first half of the 15th century.

(approx. 1390-1460)

A radical critic of the Church and feudal society and opponent of the Church’s temporal power. He was convinced of the need to reform the church and life itself and he was even more radical than Jan Hus himself in his ideas. He adhered to the biblical principle of love and not opposing evil using violence. He was convinced that it was necessary to refuse violence and therefore he also refused the Hussite Wars. He only acknowledged spiritual battle.

He formulated his thoughts in writings titled On Spiritual Warfare, On the Triple Division of Society, Postila and Net of Faith.
The religious Unity of Brethren society, which was established in the Czech lands in 1457, follows his teachings.
During the 19th century Chelcický’s teachings were a significant source of inspiration for the Russian writer Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. You can find more information here
