A prose writer, dramatist, political writer, translator and literary critic. As an author Vilém Mrštík chiefly produced plays and novels, as a playwright he tended towards tragedies. Young heroes, who left their native environment and set out on the difficult path in search of happiness and self-assertion, predominate in his novels. Part of Vilém Mrštík’s literary work was produced in cooperation with his older brother Alois.

As a prose-writer Vilém Mrštík was successful with his impressionistic novel May tale (1897), which was subsequently used as the basis for a film. However, his novel Santa Lucia (1893) had been published several years earlier. The play Marysha (1894), which he wrote with his brother Alois, is considered his finest dramatic work. It is a classic Czech theatrical work about an unequal marriage, which ends in a family tragedy. The play has become part of the classic Czech theatre repertoire. The nine-volume novel titled A year in a village (1903-1904) was also the result of the brothers’ partnership.
