August 2011 saw Karla Olšáková, a student at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague, awarded the prestigious Marzee Graduate Prize by the Marzee Gallery in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, for her dissertation work in the branch of jewellery.

The Marzee Gallery is one of the largest galleries in The Netherlands and the largest gallery of modern jewellery in the world. Every August, the Gallery awards the Marzee Graduate Prize to between five and seven young artists for their graduate works.

Karla Olšáková had drawn inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s famous books “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. She chose three strong elements of the story – mirroring, chessboard, and scale and proportion – and created a collection called “The secrets found behind the mirror” comprising jewels made of wood, veneer and metal. The collection includes a set named “Mirroring” consisting of two brooches made of cedar wood and metal. There is also a necklace of black veneer, inspired by the chessboard pattern. The third component is a veneer brooch called “Proportion and scale” with a content of invisible metal ingredients enabling the jewel to change in various ways.

Out of the almost 100 candidate works created by international students, the Gallery chose to award six worthy creations, among them the collection by Karla Olšáková.
