“Martina Sáblíková Mastered Speed Skating Ovals, And More!”

93 sportsmen and sportswomen represented the Czech Republic at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The hottest candidates for winning an Olympic medal were certainly the speed skater Martina Sáblíková and cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer. Many also wished for a medal from Tomáš Verner, but he did not succeed in the competition and ended up in 19th place. The performance of our figure skater Michal Březina, who got to 9th place, was surprising.  Martina Sáblíková succeeded in the 3,000 m run, in which she was unbeaten. The first medal for the Czech Republic was gold!  The second – bronze – medalist was the cross-country skier Lukáš Bauer in the 15 km free technique run, on the next day after the great triumph of Martina Sáblíková. But she did not hang about for long and won the bronze medal at the 1,500 m run – a run that is rather secondary for this tiny woman.  Her main competition for 5,000 m was then the “icing on the cake” and Sáblíková won her third medal in her dominant discipline – another gold!
Also very surprising was the 4 x 10 km relay, run by Martin Jakš, Lukáš Bauer, Jiří Magál and Martin Koukal, who won a bronze medal for our country.
With the sum total of 6 medals, we placed 13th along with Poland.
