There will be an increase in some taxes from 1 January 2010. The consumer tax on motor petrol, other petrol and petrol-type aviation fuel will increase by one crown per litre. This also applies to medium oil and heavy gas oil. The alcohol consumption tax will also increase by up to 20 crowns per litre of ethanol. The basic tax rate on beer will increase from the existing CZK 24/hl to CZK 32/hl, which will manifest itself in an increase in beer prices from 50 hellers to one crown per half litre. Plzeňský Prazdroj, Budějovický Budvar and the Heineken group have already announced an increase in prices.

Value Added Tax (VAT) also increased by 1 per cent as at the New Year. The reduced VAT tax rate is now 10% and the basic VAT tax rate has been increased to 20%.

The cigarette tax rate, or more precisely its fixed component, will also increase from 1 February, from CZK 1.03/item to CZK 1.09/item and the smoking tobacco tax rate will increase from the existing CZK 1,280/kg to CZK 1,350/kg. This will manifest itself in an increase of approximately CZK 2.50 in the price of a packet of cigarettes.
