The northern and north-eastern edge of the region is bordered by the Krkonoše Mountains and the Orlické Mountains. On the contrary, the south and the southwest of the territory isare formed by a fertile valley of the Elbe River. Due to the unique and varicoloured landscape, the
Královéhradecký Region is considered a top tourist destination within the Czech Republic. Most foreign visitors come from Germany, The Netherlands and Poland.
The region is proud of the highest mountain in the Czech Republic,
Sněžka (map) (1,602 m above sea). It is located in the
Krkonoše, the highest Czech mountain range. Due to optimal winter conditions, the Krkonoše are extremely attractive for lovers of winter sports. The territory of the Krkonoše includes the protected landscape area of the
Krkonoše National Park (map). Other protected landscape areas in the region are:
Broumovsko (map), the
Orlické Mountains (map) and
Bohemian Paradise (map), the most frequently visited locality in the region.
On the other hand, the valley of Polabí is an ideal destination for bikers and offers a great number of cycling trails. In addition, there are abundant water ways and channels, as well as spa resorts – for example,
Velichovky (map),
Bohdaneč (map) and
Bělohrad (map).
Among the other extremely attractive tourist destinations, it is worth mentioning the national natural reserves
Adršpach-Teplice Rocks (map), the cosy Babiččino údolí in Ratibořice, the
ZOO and safari in Dvůr Králové nad Labem (map) and the
Baroque Hospital Kuks (map) (national cultural monument), the
Monastery in Broumov (map), the
Probošt Mechanical Christmas Crib in Třebechovice pod Orebem (map), the
Gothic Kost Castle (map), castles in Náchod, Častolovice, Opočno, Nové Město nad Metují,
Jaroměř (map) etc.
