(*1974)

These twin brothers are the stars of the world-renowned Hamburg Ballet. In 1993, they were engaged as members of the chorus. In 1995, they were appointed soloists, and in 1997, they earned the title First Soloists.

Jiří Bubeníček

This dancer and choreographer graduated from the dance conservatory in Prague in 1993. Even during his studies, he had already won an international honor (Prix de Lausanne, 1992).

He played the title roles in the ballets of John Neumeier, Mats Eko, Natalie Makarova and others at the Hamburg Ballet.

He combines supreme physical performances with formal perfection and characterizational prowess. The range of his acting abilities is unprecedentedly wide: from roles full of humor and comicality to lyrical and tragic roles. (Solor in La Bayadere, Ludvik Bavorsky in Illusion: as Swan Lake). John Neumeier has created several roles specifically for him: Hans in the ballet Undine (1994), Treplev in The Seagulls (2002) and in particular the role of the brilliant dancer Nijinsky (Nijinsky, 2000). In 2002, he was awarded the Benois de la danse prize for the role of Armand Duvala in La dame aux camélias.

Since 1999, he has dedicated himself to choreography for Prague’s Laterna magika theater. In 2002, he created two parts of the presentation Graffiti (music: Peter Gabriel, Philip Glass). In the same year, he won second place at the international ballet competition in Varna for the choreography for Made on Earth to the music of Ch. Zehnder.

Otto Bubeníček

A dancer who graduated from the Dance Conservatory in Prague as well. He won international honors while still studying at the conservatory (Prix de Lausanne and the Television Viewers Prize, 1992).

He has been noted at Hamburg Ballet for his elegance and formal refinement of expression combined with an inner lyricism. He has made use of these qualities in various projects, e.g. in George Balanchine’s choreography for Theme and Variation, in the role of the Prince in Prokofiev’s Cinderella or as Chevalier Des Grieux in La dame aux camélias.

New artistic assignments have also uncovered genre possibilities for his personality that have so far proved unlimited: these include passionate dramatic characters (Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, the “Spirit of War” in Odyssee, Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty with choreography by Mats Eko) and a sense of hyperbole and humor (Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others). John Neumeier created the role of Trigorin specifically for him in The Seagulls to the music of Dmitri Shostakovich, and also entrusted him with the role of the Golden Slave and the Faun in the presentation of Nijinsky, in which he gave a guest performance together with his brother at the Paris Opera in 2003.
