Citizens of the Czech Republic are going to vote in two elections this year, which may significantly change distribution of the political power in the country. All of this will start on 28 and 29 May. The people will elect their representatives to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic from the afternoon of Friday 28 May till 2:00 PM on Saturday. The new Czech government will consist of members of the winning political parties.

We can only speculate so far on when the new prime minister with his new cabinet will advance to the Deputies, asking for a vote of confidence.  If the negotiations are difficult, they can be extended for the entire summer. The autumn will, however, certainly signal the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic election and municipal election, when the citizens will elect their representatives to the municipal and local councils.  These will then assign their members to the posts of new mayors of cities and towns.

Citizens of the Czech Republic over 18 years of age have the right to vote at the Czech Parliament Election and Municipal election.  Candidates over 21 years of age will compete for 200 seats in the Czech Chamber of Deputies election.  The term of the Deputies’ office is four years on the provision that a preliminary election is not held.  To be included in the process of converting the votes to mandates, the party needs to receive a minimum of five per cent of votes in the election.
