Czech Press Photo

photo:  (CZECH PRESS PHOTO 2012)

The Czech Press Photo is an internationally recognised competition accompanied by an exhibition of news photographs taken by photojournalists living in the Czech Republic or Slovakia. It is based on the World Press Photo competition and has regularly taken place since 1995.

The main aims of the competition and exhibition are to offer the public a chance to witness the events of the ending year, motivate photo-journalists and to support the development of photo-journalism in general.

Photographers with permanent residence either in the Czech Republic or Slovakia can participate in the Czech Press Photo competition with photos taken from 30 September 2011 and 30 September 2012. The photos must be taken for publication purposes and may be either in colour or black and white. There are nine competition categories: Photograph of the Year, Spot News, General News, People in the News, Sport, Everyday Life, Portrait, Nature and Environment and Art.

The photographs are judged by an expert international jury. It is the journalistic quality (informative value, reaction, topicality) that makes the largest part of the jury’s decision but the aesthetic value is assessed as well. The jury is presented with anonymous photos. The winning and other selected photographs will be consequently displayed at the CZECH PRESS PHOTO 2013 Exhibition and accessible to the public.

The photographs of this year’s 18th Czech Press Photo Competition will be available to visitors from 20 November 2013 to 31 January 2014 at the Old Town City Hall (Map) in Prague. The exhibition will then travel throughout the world in the hands of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

You can find more information about the event here.
