The entire region is predominantly mountainous and surrounded by the northern part of the Czech Basin, the Jizera Mountains, the western Giant Mountains with the Giant foothills and the eastern part of the Lusetian Mountains. The region is characterised by a wide variety of natural ecosystems and a high concentration of protected areas. It is home to 5 protected landscape areas (Czech Central Mountains, Jizera Mountains, Lusetian Mountains, Bohemian Paradise, and the Kokořín Region), 7 national nature reserves, 8 national natural monuments, 36 nature reservations, and 61 natural monuments.
The Liberec Region can be characterised as an industrial region. The region has glassmaking, jewellery production, mechanical engineering, and manufacturing industries with close ties to automobile production. The traditional textile industry has lost its dominant position due to a drop-off in recent years.
A significant part of the regional economy is tourism. Exceptional countryside, natural formations and sights, and culturally historic
monuments of the region are all objectives of domestic and foreign visitors. The unique structure on the top of Mt. Ještěd, which has a feature that dominates Liberec and the entire region, is worth seeing. Historically valuable places that are seen by many visitors include X1 castles and chateaux X1, such as Bezděz

Valdštejn (map), and also many Church buildings. The landscape is enriched by many lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, the most famous of which is
