Born on 17th September 1873 in Kroměříž. He was an artist and graphic artist and is considered one of the most important Czech 20th century artists. He was appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in Prague and headed the department of graphic design. He is largely responsible for promoting Czech art throughout Europe. He was admired for his unique draughtsmanship and various graphic techniques. His works encompass many types of artistic expression, from monumental-decorative such as stained glass, mosaics, murals and tapestry, through painting, pastels, aquarelle, drawing and book illustration to applied graphic art. He worked with practically all classic graphic techniques (etching, dry-point engraving, mezzotint, lithography, wood-cut, etc.). He was also very successful in the field of applied graphic art as he also designed postage stamps and bank notes.
His paintings were affected by historicist tendencies, particularly neo-renaissance, as well as nature. Švabinsky’s work contains many mythological subjects and natural scenes. He also painted portraits, in which we can see many important people of his time, whether these were personal friends or Czech notables from history, science or the political scene. His best-known monumental works are his designs for the stained glass in three windows for the Cathedral of Saint Vitus in Prague, and also his mosaics, murals and tapestries.
