The Czech Republic belongs to
the biggest producers of freshwater fish in the European Union. Fishery has a long tradition here. Despite technological progress, fishing out is still done manually. Thus it is a good example of the fishermen’s skill, professionalism and love for their work.
Firstly, the water is carefully discharged from the ponds and when everything is ready, tens of people in waterproof cloaks and high shoes spread nets at the break of dawn and step into the cold mud. They set and slowly pull the nets with caught fish, finally reaching the bank in the evening. Afterwards, the fish are moved to storage basins where most of them await their Christmas consumers because it would not be a Czech Christmas without a fish.
A part of the traditional pond fishing out is the sale of fresh fish right at the bank, tasting of fish delicacies prepared both traditionally and in a modern style, displays of fishermen’s craft and skill or various exhibitions related to fishery. A craft fair or tasting of typical regional meals also accompanies this event in many places.
