Many unusual events take place at many historical sites in the Czech Republic throughout the summer and at the beginning of autumn, which could easily be classed in the Schola ludus – School as a game concept established by the teacher of nations and famous Czech native John Amos Comenius (Jan Amos Komensky).

Visitors to these events will learn many interesting historical facts, will be able to see period costumes with their own eyes and view various periods in history. Famous events include battle re-enactments, guided nocturnal tours of historic town centres, jousting tournaments and swordplay demonstrations at castles and chateaux and various cultural events at historic sites.

X1 Rogar 2010 – Viking Betrayal X1 – a re-enactment of an early medieval battle, which takes place near Neveklov (map). The programme includes demonstrations of historical crafts, a spear-throwing competition, an archery contest, warriors’ race and many other interesting events.

Historic battle –  a demonstration of a battle from the Thirty Years War at Rajhrad (map) with a performance by historical swordplay groups, a historical fair and camp, an exhibition of weapons, torch parade and fire show on the evening before the event.

Battle of White Mountain 1620 – a re-enactment of the decisive battle of the Thirty Years War with a varied accompanying programme, which takes place every year near the Hvězda Summer Mansion in Prague 6 (map).

Tábor Gathering at Tábor (map) – a medieval festival offering a historical marketplace and fair, historical swordplay demonstrations and a pageant through the town.

Queen Elizabeth’s Celebrations – a medieval fair with accompanying programme in Hradec Králové (map). You will be able to see fights between gladiators, contests in historical swordplay, magic shows, jousting and performances with horses.

More information is available here.

Guided nocturnal tours of historic towns, which take place in some Czech towns and also castles and chateaux, are also very popular. Ghosts and figures from legends also come alive in many places. You can visit these events in Jindřichuv Hradec (map), Český Krumlov (map) or Švihov Castle (map).
