Jeseníky Mountains

The Jeseníky Mountains is unique for its floristic richness, which is caused mainly by the altitude division and polymorphism of the landscape; climate and oil structure are other important factors.

Location: North Moravia and Bohemian part of Silesia, on the border of the Moravia-Silesia and Olomouc regions, not far from towns of Bruntál, Jeseník and Šumperk.

The topography of the area is rugged and mountainous with deep valleys. Vegetation is represented by flowering and acidic mountain beech groves and, at higher altitudes, by natural pine groves, alpine associations and high moors. Dwarf pine is not a tree indigenous to this region. The absence of mountain pine in the original vegetation is one of the reasons for the vast number of species in some locations in the alpine band. (For example, 450 species of higher plants can be found in the Large Basin, making it the richest botanical location in the Czech Republic.)

Climatically speaking, most of the territory is ranked among the colder areas and the mountain ridges are some of the coldest in the country. (Praděd has an annual rainfall of 1,440 millimeters and an average annual temperature of 0.9°C).

There are five nature trails in the area: Velká kotlina, Bílá Opava, Rejvíz, Červenohorské sedlo - Šerák and the Sobotín-Maršíkov mineralogical nature trail.

There is a public camp in Karlov, car campsites in Vrbno pod Pradědem and in Lipová lázně (Bobrovník).

Spa centers: Priessnitzovy lázně Jeseník, Lipová-lázně, Karlova Studánka and Velké Losiny.

Area: 740 km²
Height above sea level: 339 meters
1,492 meters (Praděd)
