The Shrove Tuesday carnival has a long tradition in the Czech Republic. Its chief attraction has always been the masked parade. However, the
Festival Bohemian Carnevale is slightly different. It could be likened to the Carnevale in Venice.
It takes place every year at many locations in the centre of Prague – in public areas, palaces, museums, galleries, theatres, schools and workshops and even some restaurants and stores. The event program is widely varied; you can look forward to the masked Royal Baroque Ball, the triumphal allegorical parade towards Old Town Square and a magnificent, real Bengal fireworks show. There will also be entertainment for children, with many theatre attractions being prepared for them.
This year there will be one innovation – the Carnevale Praha information centre and shop in Zlatá ulička (Golden Lane). This is where you can find current information about the celebrations or purchase a carnival mask from the Franzis Wussin studio, which is the official supplier of masks for the Prague carnival. Or you can hire a mask. It’s worth it. Wear the mask and become anybody you wish, at least for a while. There are no limits to your fantasy.
