The history and the cultural monuments of the city Český Krumlov (map), inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, can even proudly compete with golden Prague.

Český Krumlov, with its number of valuable historical sites, picturesque qualities and originality does not fall behind the capital city in any aspect.  The Egon Schiele Art Centrum was opened in 1993. Since then it has built an international reputation and is one site that is deserving of special attention.  It owes its foundation to the private initiative of three people – the American Serge Sabarsky, Gerwald Sonnberger who is Austrian and Hana Jirmusová, a Czech and also the current manager of the centre.

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum is located in a former brewery building, occupying a generous area of 5,000 . It not only serves as an exhibition space for the classical and contemporary art of prominent 20th century Czech and foreign artists, it also fulfils a role as an inspirational and creative environment.  It includes ateliers that painters, photographers and writers can rent for their studies or creative work. The Art Centrum also offers a permanent exposition of Egon Schiele, the artist it was named after. As a child, he used to stay in Český Krumlov when visiting his relatives and kept coming back for inspiration during his studies at the Academy in Vienna, intending to settle in Krumlov for good in 1911. However, this plan was never brought to life so Egon Schiele returned to Český Krumlov every year to draw and paint until 1917.

The cultural project was developed with the financial support of the city of Český Krumlov, the Czech Ministry of Culture and the South Bohemian Region. Among the foreign sponsors, the most important are the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

You can find more information about the centre here.
