The zoo consists of an all-year opened classical zoological garden, laying in lowlands, and of a seasonal safari, situated in a slightly undulating terrain with sufficient amount of water areas. A part of a tour may be done by trailer-train. Before the entrance to the garden, there is a large carpark. The area offers many possibilites to buy refreshments and souvenirs, e.g. at a promotion materials store.
The total area of the area is 62.5 hectares, of which 49 hectares are occupied by egresses for animals.
The zoological garden was established in 1946.
The Zoo in Dvůr Králové specializes in African animals, mainly in ungulates. The zoo is among the world's remarkable breeders of African subungulates. It also contributed to the re-introduction of Kaffir buffalo and horse antelope in the nature of South Africa. It participates in31 European breeding EEP programs.
Among the most remarkable species we can find there is the African wild dog, cheetah, pard, orangutang, Cuban crocodile, Sunda gavial, salmon-crested Cockatoo, Liberian hippopotamus, Sumatran rhinoceros, rhinoceros unicornis, white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum), African elephant, antelope canyon, snow leopard and gorilla.
Worth visiting are the egresses of subungulates (part of which is passable by bus), the pavilion of beasts, the pavilion of bongos, the fish and reptile pavilion (coral world, tropic river), the pavilion of apes and a unique bird pavilion, called Birds World.
