The Czech Press Photo is a world-famous competition followed by an exhibition of journalistic photography created by Czech and Slovak photo reporters. Inspired by the international World Press Photo, it has annually taken place since 1995.

The purpose of the competition and exhibition is to offer visitors a chance to experience the events of the previous year. Through the competition, photojournalist’s should be motivated for further work, and the exhibition means a great support to photojournalism in general.

Photographers participating in the Czech Press Photo competition are required to have permanent residency in the Czech Republic or Slovakia and present photos taken from 30 September 2010 to 30 September 2011. The photographs, both colour and black and white, are supposed to be taken for publishing purposes. The competition is divided into eight categories: spot news, general news, people in the news, sport, everyday life, portrait, nature and environment and art.

The competing photos are judged by an expert international jury focusing on the journalistic value of the photos (informativeness, immediateness, currentness) as well as their aesthetic side. The jurors are presented with anonymous pictures. The awarded photos, along with a selection of the remaining pictures, are subsequently exhibited at CZECH PRESS PHOTO 2011, which is accessible to the wider public.

The winning photos of the 17th Czech Press Photo will be publicly exhibited from 15 November 2011 to 31 January 2012 at the Old Town Hall (map) in Prague. The exhibition will then move throughout the world in the hands of delegates from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

You can find more detailed information on the event here.
