The castle of Konopiště was founded by Bishop Tobiáš of Benešov as a Gothic fortress derived from the French type of medieval castles at the end of the 13th century. As time passed, many noble families came and went at Konopiště.In 1887, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d´Este bought the estate and transformed Konopiště into the grand seat of a future emperor. The rooms were filled with museum collections, the main part of which came from Italian Modena legacy.
The Rose Garden with greenhouses was created in the existing Baroque garden.
Currently under way is a project called Konopiště Tales,an attempt to tell about a certain period in its own language, via its stories and documents. To the visitor this should bring a little adventure as well as an opportunity to learn more about the time of Franz Ferdinand and his wife Žofie Chotková.
