The monastery in Osek was founded in the late 12th century. The first Cistercians came to Osek in the year 1199. The monastery complex was gradually enlarged  in the style of Burgundian Gothic and soon became the cultural and economic hub of the region.

It got its present-day appearance after the Baroque reconstruction in 1712-18. The interior was decorated with paintings by Václav V. Reiner.

In the chapter hall there is a unique Early Gothic reading counter made of stone with a carved base in the shape of a knot. In its time, the church organ was one of the biggest in Europe.
