Ivan Passer

Ivan Passer is one of the most famous exponents of the Czech New Wave. Before his own feature debut, he collaborated with Miloš Forman on the films Lásky jedné plavovlásky (Loves of a Blonde) and Hoří, má panenko (The Firemen’s Ball) as a joint-screenwriter and assistant director.

His debut as director on his own was a short film Fádní odpoledne (A Boring Afternoon ), based on a story by Bohumil Hrabal. He followed this with his first and only film made in Czechoslovakia, Intimní osvětlení (Intimate Lighting ), which won Passer international renown.

The Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 forced him to leave his homeland. He began building a new film career in the United States. Although his American films haven’t been a huge success commercially, they have been very well received by critics. His best films made in the United States are probably Cutter’s Way (1981), a drama about a Vietnam War veteran, and the TV movie Stalin with Robert Duvall in the title role.

Important films:

  • 1964 – Fádní odpoledne (A Boring Afternoon), a short film, Grand Prix at the Locarno Festival
  • 1965 – Intimní osvětlení (Intimate Lighting)
  • 1971 – Born to Win, his American debut
  • 1981 – Cutter’s Way
  • 1992 – Stalin
